Good read with some danger and mystery

Let Sleeping Dukes Lie - M. Emily E. Windsor-Cragg

This story has lots of adventure, spying, and romance. I loved Aideen's spirit and determination as she tried to get through to Alex. The Duke had such a firm stance on his past that I had to admire him, but it was satisfying when he began to see beyond his past. I recommend this story and look forward to more in this series.

I received a copy of this story as a gift, and it is a Book Obsessed Chick Star Review selection. This is my unsolicited review.

Secrets cannot stop true love

The Highlander's Fury - Maeve Greyson

What would you give up for love? I enjoyed listening to this story as I found out what Ciara and Faolan were willing to do. Secrets make this a good read as these two learn about faith and love. The characters are strong, yet accepting of change. The narrator, Rebecca McKernan, made the story come alive and entertaining. I recommend the story.

Book Blast: Unbreakable Bond by Jess Bryant

Unbreakable Bond
by Jess Bryant

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Sometimes fate gets it all wrong.

Zoey Kent has lived with that fact ever since she turned eighteen and learned that the man she loved could never be hers. He’s a born shifter, a wolf, and she’s a mere human. Fate doesn’t care if on paper they’re a perfect pair. She isn’t his fated mate and she’s resigned herself to the knowledge that someday, she’ll have to watch Michael mate with another. It’s never crossed her mind that there might be someone else out there for her, that she would be the one to mate another, to choose another over everything she’s ever known or wanted.

Sometimes fate gets it all right.

Rafe Hudson left his pack behind years ago. Physically and mentally scarred from an attack that left his parents and twin dead, he walked away from his responsibilities as Alpha. He never intended to return but lone wolf or not, he can’t leave Michael open to an attack he’s learned is coming for his only brother. What he didn’t know was that going home would mean scenting his mate, the one person in the world that could make him whole again, that could give him everything he thought he’d lost. His pack, his home and his family.

But fate always has a plan.

There’s no way Michael’s brother is her future, is there? Just like there’s no way that the girl his brother has loved since they were kids, was always meant to be his, right?

Only fate knows why they were brought together but there is one thing for sure, the sparks between Zoey and Rafe are undeniable. The bond between them is unbreakable. And together… they’ll change the face of the pack forever.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Rafe Hudson was going to rip his little brother’s intestines out and use them to choke him to death. It was a fantasy he’d been living over and over in his head for the past few hours. It was a fantasy that he would have fulfilled already if only she hadn’t stopped him.
Her. Zoey. His mate. He was still trying to wrap his head around how that was even possible.
All of those years out there in the big, bad world. All of his time spent roaming from city to town to countryside. He hadn’t been out there looking for her but he was what he was. He was a shifter and it was hard coded in him to seek the woman that was meant to make him whole. In the back of his mind, every time he encountered a new woman, a new wolf or other shifter, he’d wondered if she was the one.
He’d wondered if he would find her at his next stop or the one after that. He’d wondered where she was and if she was looking for him too. And, in his darkest moments, he’d wondered if fate had even seen fit to give him a mate when he’d already failed to protect those that meant the most to him once.
He’d failed his family, his entire pack. He had been the one to run past the boundary line. He was the one the hunters had followed back to camp. He was the reason they were all dead, every one of them.
His proud father, the leader of them all. His mother, the sweetest wolf to have ever been born. And Gabe, his littermate, his twin, his other half in every way. The only member of his family that hadn’t been in the woods that day was Michael and because fate liked to throw punches when you were already down, Rafe knew that the reason his little brother hadn’t been there was because he’d been with her.
Zoey.
To find out, after all of this time, that she was his? That she’d been his all along? That she was his but that she’d been here with his brother? Well, that was an injustice he wouldn’t, and couldn’t, tolerate.
Steamy paranormal read, could use more story
Taming Tabitha - Virginia Nelson
Very steamy short read. This is about mates finding each other and giving their all. There is more to the storyline, so I look forward to reading more. Tabitha is unusual for her kind so her mates are unusual as well. Lancaster and Gage are opposites but are what Tabitha needs. I liked them but would prefer more of their story.
I received a copy of this story through Candid Book Reviews, and this is my unsolicited review.
Historical romance with a little steampunk, loved the characters.
Deceiving the Earl - Kirsten S. Blacketer
A story full of secrets, danger, mystery, elements of steampunk, and love. Both Adele and Christopher have experienced loss, but their common goal brings them together. I enjoyed the tale as things unfolded, although I kind of knew who did it before the end, and the chemistry between Adele and Christopher was well worth the read. I recommend this story.
I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
Danger, secrets, and guilt kept me listening to this one.
The Mysterious Miss Flint - Adele Clee
This was a fun listen, and Liisa Ivary did a wonderful job of keeping me interested with her emotions as she narrated. Nicole has been through a lot but still has the ability to trust the right person. Oliver is full of guilt and does not want closeness with anyone. I enjoyed both characters and their journeys to finding themselves and true love. I recommend this story (book or audio) and look forward to the next in the series.
I received a copy of this audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
Interesting so far, read two of six stories.
Rogue Hearts - Kelly Maher, Suleikha Snyder, Emma Barry, Stacey Agdern, Amy Jo Cousins, Tamsen Parker
This is a collection of stories, and I have not finished all of them yet.
In Her Service - Suleika Snyder - This is a quick read and a little short for me. I wanted to know more detail about Letty and Shahzad. Their love already existed at the beginning of the story, but I loved his loyalty and devotion to Letty. I also enjoyed how they disregarded others opinions considering they were in the public eye.
Run - Emma Barry - Both Maddie and Adam are strong characters. I loved Maddie's honesty, commitment, and steadfastness. I felt for his indecision because of his past experiences.
Good read about learning to love and trust again
A Duke Like No Other - Valerie Bowman
I enjoyed this story of a married couple finding their way back to each other. Nicole and Mark hurt each other but find they need each other now. The physical attraction never disappeared, but the trust needs to be rebuilt. Both are strong characters, and I laughed and cried as the story progressed. I recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.
I received a copy of this story through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
A little too much head hopping, but an enjoyable story nonetheless
Devil's Run - Beverley Oakley
I liked this story though it was a little helter skelter with points of view. Eliza's past comes back and gives her a big reason to get married. Problem: not to the right man. Her belief in fixing the past gave her a strength through unconditional love. Rufus was a good man but had to work through his concept of right and wrong before accepting what was in front of him.
Blog Tour, New Release: A Duke Like No Other by Valerie Bowman.
Released May 1st, 2018.
Summary:
First comes love, then comes marriage. Unless it’s the other way around. . .
General Mark Grimaldi has sacrificed everything for his military career, working his way through the ranks without the benefit of a nobleman’s title. Now, his years of dedication are about to pay off—with an offer for a prestigious promotion to Home Secretary. There’s only one condition: Mark must be married. Aside from the small matter of not actually wanting to be wed, Mark faces another troubling problem: he already has a wife.
Nicole Huntington Grimaldi has spent ten contented years in France without her husband—and without regret. When Mark asks her to return to London and play the part of his beloved wife, she sees her chance. But neither of them is prepared for news that will throw Mark’s future into chaos…nor the undeniable desire they’ve rekindled. Maybe happily-ever-after can happen the second time around in A Duke Like No Other, the next Regency romance from Valerie Bowman.
Excerpt:
CHAPTER THREE
Mark quirked his mouth into a half smile. Nicole had always been direct. It was one of the things that had first drawn him to her. She wasn’t about to let him get away with arriving unannounced without admitting that he wanted something. Good, because he liked to be direct too. “You’re right. I do want something from you.”
“Say it.” She crossed one leg over the other and for the life of him he couldn’t stop staring at how those breeches hugged her long legs. Outside, he’d been slightly obsessed with how they hugged another part of her anatomy. And that shirt . . . the one that was exposing her chest in a way that made the back of his neck sweat. Leave it to Nicole to have her hair down and to be wearing breeches while riding around a French château on a horse named Atalanta. She’d been besting the comte in the race they’d been engaged in. That was also like her. She adored competition and hated to lose at anything. If he had any hope of her saying yes to his proposal, he needed to make certain he didn’t become her adversary . . . again.
He glanced around the drawing room. Outfitted in rose and cream silks with the occasional hint of green, the room was tastefully decorated. The château itself was large and well appointed without being ostentatious. She had access to his money but had never spent a shilling of it. No, this was all a result of her own money or her family’s.
He spread his arms wide along the back of the settee. “No reminiscing? No catching up? No discussing the good times?”
Her dark red eyebrow inched even higher. “Were there good times? I seem to recall those being few and far between.”
“There were a few.” In bed. He tugged at his collar.
She poked at the chignon on the back of her head. Only she could make a quickly put-together hair arrangement look effortlessly gorgeous. Several tendrils of the long red locks fell to frame her face, which wore a decidedly disgruntled look. “Out with it. I’m quite busy. I’m attending a dinner party this evening and I must dress.”
Mark bit the inside of his cheek but ultimately he couldn’t keep the comment that had sprung to his lips to himself. “A cleaner pair of breeches?” Damn, she looked good in those breeches. She looked good altogether. Better than good. The years had been kind to her. The fresh-faced plumpness of her cheeks had given way to a slenderness that made her cheekbones prominent. Her lips were still full and pink and inviting. Her hair luxurious, soft and smooth. Her eyes looked more world-weary, to be sure, but their sea-foam-green depths were still astute and intelligent. Her body was still trim and fit. Her thighs looked even fitter, probably from riding astride. Ahem. What he wouldn’t give to see those thighs once more, to have them wrapped tightly around his—
“Despite my present appearance, I do own a gown or two.” Her words snapped him out of his indecent line of thought. She gave him another tight smile.
He stood, crossed to the nearby sideboard, and poured himself a brandy. “Going to meet the comte again?”
“Careful,” came her throaty voice from the settee. “It’s nearly sounding as if you’re jealous.”
Still facing the sideboard, he cocked his head to the side. “Jealous? Whatever does that word mean?”
“The comte is a friend, nothing more.” Her voice sounded dismissive. He didn’t believe her, however.
Mark splashed more brandy into his glass. “I’m certain you’d tell me if he weren’t.”
“I’m certain you’d care.”
Mark turned back toward her and took a healthy swig of his drink. “A man doesn’t like to think of his wife in the bed of another.”
She actually rolled her eyes at that comment. “Oh, you’ve been celibate all these years then?” she countered, her voice dripping with skepticism.
He had been, but he’d die a slow death back in the French prison camp before he told her that. However, he wasn’t so unrealistic as to think Nicole would have remained untouched. They had agreed to part ways, hadn’t seen each other in ten years. She was a beautiful woman in the prime of her life. Still, the notion of punching the comte dead in the face held a great deal of appeal at the moment. “I’ve never been one to kiss and tell, love.”
She gave him a tight smile, which clearly indicated she didn’t believe him, either. “You’re a general now?” she asked abruptly, clearly ready to change the subject.
“I am.” He moved to the window and looked out across the lavender fields, one arm held behind his ramrod-straight back as if he were surveying a battlefield. The stance was still comfortable for him even after all these years of working for the Home Office.
“I suppose congratulations are in order.” The tea arrived and Nicole poured a cup for herself and splashed in a liberal amount of cream. He remembered that about her. She took her tea with no sugar, just cream.
“No congratulations needed,” he intoned, taking another swig of brandy.
The silver spoon she used to stir her tea clinked against the delicate china teacup. “I must admit, I’ve often wondered when I’d get a missive that you’d been killed.”
His chuckle was humorless. He turned to face her. “Such little faith in me? Or wishful thinking?”
“Neither,” she replied, lifting the cup to her pink lips. “Just a profound knowledge of how reckless you are.”
He inclined his head. “Used to be.”
“Really?” She raised a brow. “Is that why you’ve come? To tell me you’ve changed?”
He chuckled. “I haven’t changed that much.”
“I’m not surprised.” She set down her teacup and crossed her arms over her chest. “Tell me, Mark, why have you come?”
He saluted her with his glass, the amber-colored liquid shining in the afternoon sunlight. “You were right. I need a favor from you.”
She didn’t so much as bat an eyelash. “Of course you do. What’s the favor?” She picked up her cup once more and took a sip.
He downed the final splash of brandy and met her gaze. “I need you to return to England with me for a few months and pretend to be my loving wife.”
Soft Marble
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Paranormal GLBT Romance

BLURB:

One touch from his lover and this marble will come to life.

Kratos, God of power and strength, has been imprisoned in pure white marble for more than two centuries. His lover can break the spell—if only his lover would find him.

Andy Green knows his ancient artifacts. He spends his days restoring works of art. When the sculpture of Kratos enters his studio, he can’t hide his attraction. Will he be able to free the god or will forces beyond his control destroy everything he’s earned?

“Do you have some … clothing?” Kratos waved his hand in front of Andy. “Something like you have?”

“I’ve got a change of clothes in my car. I don’t know if they’ll fit you, but anything is better than running around nude.”

“Nude can be freeing.” If he had his way, he’d strip the odd clothing from Andy’s body and learn every bit of him.

“Freeing, but it can get you arrested. Public nudity is against the law on campus.” Andy grinned. “Give me a minute or two. My car’s in the back lot.”

“Car?”

“Ah—it’s like a chariot, but without the horses.”

“Interesting.” He had so much to learn. He’d been able to observe some things, but not enough to venture out on his own. Andy would be invaluable, and not just as a guide.

Andy picked up keys. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.” He hurried out of the room, leaving Kratos to his thoughts.

Kratos glanced around the room. The human race evolved so well. Tall windows opened the view to the other rooms in the building. A couple of other statues waited in the room. They weren’t the vessels for imprisoned deities. He touched the face of the female statue. He remembered seeing the work back in Athens. Praxiteles carved Aphrodite well and captured the very essence of her faint smile. He’d been vanguard to sculpt her without clothing. Then again, Aphrodite preferred to spend her time in the nude—usually with one of her many suitors.

He sighed and folded his arms. He missed the other gods and goddesses. What he didn’t miss was the water and the ship. The man who’d rescued him from the depths of the sea didn’t please him and couldn’t free him from the marble. He shuddered at the memory of the man’s hands on his body. Rough touches, fondling his ass while the man grunted and rubbed his own dick on Kratos’s thigh. His stomach churned. Was the rescuer the man who sent him? Couldn’t be. That man had to be dead by now. Then who was his owner? He wanted to think about better things—like Andy. He closed his eyes. A vision of Andy’s bright-blue eyes formed in Kratos’s mind. He could listen to Andy’s voice and moan into his touch.

“You’ve broken the curse.”

CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET

Simon Bridgeworth believes in loyalty, and keeping things in-house. When he discovers his best friend, who has been running the Canadian division of Simon's tech empire, has been skimming millions from the company, Simon flies to Toronto to get to the bottom of the theft and learns his friend has been murdered. Devastated and at a loose end, Simon knows there's no way the company's problems can be kept under wraps now. Imagine his surprise when he learns the Mountie investigating the murder is the first repeat Simon has allowed himself in years.

Sergeant Nick Cooper is a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He's served his country in the military, and now he's protecting the citizenry of Toronto. But devotion to duty is no longer enough. On a whim, Nick hooks up with Aristocrat69 on crUIzer, and what started as one night of incredible sex turns into an attraction neither man can ignore. When a grisly mob murder sends Nick to the Breakforce corporation, he is shocked to discover his lover is none other than its CEO. When Simon's life is threatened, ethical lines blur as Nick does anything to keep him safe - no cost is too high for the man who has become Nick's everything.

Excerpt:

Waking up to a tanned and taut arse was certainly a pleasurable way to greet the morning. Simon didn’t want to think too much about the fact he’d let a man sleep in his bed, contravening his long-held rules.

Best chalk it down to a temporary bout of insanity.

He got out of bed, leaving a slumbering Nick sprawled across the mattress—the man was a bed hog of note—and walked into the bathroom. A shower was what he needed, as the smell of sex and male cologne—not his—lingered tantalisingly on his body.

He was fixing his tie and taking a sip of freshly brewed coffee delivered via room service when he heard Nick’s groan and looked over. Nick unwound himself from the duvet and squinted at him.

“Morning,” Nick said gruffly, voice still thick with sleep. “You’re up early.” he peered owlishly at his watch. “It’s only seven a.m. on a Saturday morning.” His tone was incredulous, and Simon couldn't help grinning.

He made sure his appearance was satisfactory and turned to face Nick. “I have an appointment at eight-thirty with someone. As it’s across the city, I’d rather leave a little bit of extra time for the taxi to get there on time.”

“A business appointment?” Nick echoed. “On a Saturday?”

Simon frowned. “Yes, on a Saturday. My business doesn’t close when everyone else clocks out for the weekend. Urgent matters require urgent attention.”

Nick sat up, the covers pooling at his waist. He looked debauched and adorably tousled. “Urgent matters? Everything okay?”

Simon shook his head. “Not really. Someone has been ripping me off and I intend to find out who and why. Safe to say, I’ll be ripping them a new one when I find them.”

Nick’s eyes widened. “Wow, you look scary when you do that whole snarly thing you have going on. Sexy, but scary.” He leaned back against the headboard with a sigh. “My job isn’t respectful of weekends either. I’m on call twenty-four-seven.”

Simon noticed Nick didn't say anything further about his job and the quick prick of curiosity that flared was soon dampened. Best not to get too much detail about the man. Sharing personal information wasn’t really required at this stage.

Ignoring the part of him that really wanted to find out what Nick did, Simon reached over and picked up his document folder, and wallet.

“Well, thanks for last night. I need to get going now so feel free to clean up and leave when you're ready. Order room service if you like. My treat.”

Nick grinned lazily. “I feel like a kept man. Are you going to give me a credit card so I can buy new clothes too? Perhaps pamper myself with a facial and a massage?”

The words held no censure or pique, but Simon felt a little ashamed. “I didn’t mean to insinuate anything,” he said frostily, “I merely want you to have a comfortable experience when you're here.”

Nick flapped a hand. “Relax, Mr Uptight Brit. I was only joking.” He swung his legs out of bed, stretched and yawned as he turned to face Simon.

Simon’s mouth went dry at the sight of the chiselled naked, male torso. Damn the man was gorgeous.

Good read, instant love despite differences and danger.

Soul of Discretion - Susan Mac Nicol, M. Tasia

I loved the cockiness of Simon and the honesty of Nick. This is a quick-to-love story that kept me turning pages. The danger surrounding both helped push them together, but their pasts and presents threatened to keep them apart. This was an enjoyable read.

I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Loyalty to family keeps this story moving through the secrets.

Bargaining With a Rake - Julie Johnstone

This is a very enjoyable story. A woman, Gillian, who is willing to give up her home and her chance at happiness to protect her sister from a secret. Gillian's loyalty to family despite all the secrets surrounding her endeared her to me. She does what she thinks is right, even bargain with a rake. Alex was a good counterpart with his own dark issues. The narrator, Tristan Hunt, helped bring life and emotion to the characters. I highly recommend this story.

Another great page turner from Janna MacGregor

The Luck of the Bride - Janna MacGregor

I have enjoyed this series a lot, especially with the not-so-happy circumstances that arise. It did take me a little bit to get into the story, more so than the other two, but once it got going, I could not stop turning the pages. This story made me laugh, cry, and sigh. The strength that March had to keep their farm and home going, her family together, and improve their future was admirable. I loved how Michael stepped up once he knew he had been lax with his responsibilities. I loved all the characters throughout the series and this book. I highly recommend this book and the series.

I received a copy of this story through Netgalley, and it is a Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team selection. This is my unsolicited review.
