Book Blast: Taken By the Beast by Anya Summers

by Anya Summers

GENRE: Erotic Paranormal Romance

Gemma’s life was nearly perfect. She’s just graduated from college and is heading off to graduate school in the fall. She and her best friends are taking a trip she’s always dreamed about. Only, nothing goes as planned. After being chased on the streets of Dublin by a freaking monster, they get sucked into a portal and wind up on another world. As in, not Earth. Now she can’t find her friends, but there is this really hot, naked guy who calls himself a king and is offering her aid.

There’s only one teensy little problem: He says she’s his mate and is planning on keeping her—forever. Oh, and there’s one more thing: He’s a beast most of the time. And Gemma has to decide if she’s willing to give up everything for the one man she’s meant to be with in the universe.

The big beast followed them from above. Its great wings stirred air currents and created a wind tunnel in the alley. Dust and rocks pelted them. She searched for an escape, a doorway or a window they could climb through to safety. But the windows were too high up for them to reach. Their footsteps slowed as they reached the gray brick wall. A dead end. Their dead end.

“What are we going to do?” Moira gasped, frantically searching for a way out of their situation.

Anna whimpered. “I’m not seeing this. We’re not here. We just had something put in our drinks, and we’re back at the hotel. This is just a nightmare.”

Gemma glanced down the alley, attempting to divine their odds of making it back out the way they’d run. And then the thing, for she couldn’t call it anything else, landed in the alley and blocked off their escape route. They were fucked.

They flattened themselves against the brick wall. Gemma searched for a way out, a way to survive.

Moira and Anna flanked her. She wished she could cry like they were doing. Anna was hysterical, telling herself to wake up. Moira was whimpering, her fearful moans guttural, sounding more like they were coming from a wounded animal than a human. But for Gemma, the night had taken on a surreal bent.

The creature approached. Its booted feet crunched over the pavement. What kind of monster wore leather boots? Her scientific brain tried to make sense of the tableau. The thing appeared to be male, judging by the lines of its chest on down to its groin. His large wings, even at rest behind him as he crept toward them, spanned the width of the alley and cut off any chance of escape. The pointed tips of his wings dragged along the brick, scraping the stone. The sound was like nails down a chalkboard.

That’s when things got really weird.

As if their entire night hadn’t become completely FUBAR. They awaited their fate. Pressed against brick. Gemma had always wondered how she would feel at the end of her days, and now she knew. Thoroughly livid. She was incensed that this thing thought to screw up her well-laid plans.

His glowing silver, otherworldly gaze stoked her fury. Anna and Moira were devolving into fear. Their choked sobs filled her with dread. She was the one who had suggested this trip to celebrate their graduation. Her best friends, her sisters of the heart—their deaths would be on her. Anna had wanted to go to the Bahamas. But Gemma had swayed them, persuaded them to go to Ireland instead.

Before she could apologize and tell them she loved them, the wall they were backed up against, awaiting their fates and most likely their final moments, dissolved. Although, maybe that was too simple a term. It melted. The bricks liquefied into nothingness. Instead of stone at their backs, a swirling black mass that reminded Gemma of clouds spiraling inside a tornado, took the brick wall’s place.

The monster was close. Too close now. And he—it—picked up its pace to capture them. She didn’t want to know what the creature had in store for them.

“Go,” Gemma cried, urging her friends to step into the swirling black mist.

Review Tour: Powerful Destiny by Tricia McGill

Powerful Destiny
by Tricia McGill

GENRE: Historical/reincarnation

Can love span time?

It is 850 AD and Norse warrior Rolf lands on the shores of East Anglia determined to take revenge on a Celtic clan. Following a fierce battle, where the Celts are savagely killed, Rolf comes face to face with the daughter of the slain Celtic leader. So stunned by the beauty, along with the courage of Brigid, he is convinced that his Three Fates of Destiny brought them together. Resolved to make this woman his own, he spares the lives of the captured Celtic women and children and takes them back to his homeland across the ocean.

Strangely drawn to the Norseman who is so sure they are destined to be together, Brigid must fight against succumbing to the wishes of the man who killed her father. Nevertheless, to save her fellow Celtic captives from slavery or worse, Brigid must keep a bargain with the Norse leader—a bargain that will see her tied to him forever.

In present day Cornwall, naturally shy Rolf shares his secluded lighthouse with his wolfhound. An artist, he delights in the rugged scenery and ever-changing weather. While in the nearest bookshop one day, he meets a newcomer to town. Brigid’s unusual personality strikes a chord with him. Not only are both convinced they have met before, but their fascination for Viking and Celtic history forges an unusual bond between them.

Outspoken and forthright, Brigid sets out to break down the barrier of reserve and caution Rolf has erected over the years. Is it simply whimsy or can lovers across centuries be reunited?

The woman stood straight and proud, long hair as black as the night falling to her middle. A band around her forehead secured its flowing beauty. Her clothing was no different from that worn by any other Celtic female encountered in his past, but something about her bearing proclaimed that she was very different in some way. As she touched some sort of talisman at her belt, she muttered what could have been an incantation. Perhaps she was praying to her gods.

In all his life and many travels, never had he seen such a vision of loveliness. Then Rolf cursed beneath his breath. What was he thinking? This was a Celtic female, only fit for becoming a slave. Nevertheless, there was something about this female that told him she would be no man's slave, no matter how he tried to break her spirit.

A powerful destiny through time. Enjoyed this easy quick read.

Powerful Destiny - Tricia McGill, Tricia McGill

Fate, destiny, love. Strong through time. I enjoyed reading this story beginning with the Celts and Norsemen. Brigid was a strong woman, accepting of her fate, and realizing her destiny was with her love. Rolf knew his fate, his destiny was to be with this woman, and he treated her with such respect and reverence, beyond what was the norm for the time. They made a wonderful pair. Brigid and Rolf in the present had that instant attraction and were of a mind to be honest about it from the start. I loved how the circle came around. I recommend this book.

Review Tour: Cloaked by Taylor Hobbs

by Taylor Hobbs

GENRE: Historical Fantasy Romance

As the Cloaked Shadow, Fawkes has made his career breaking into prisons for any contract with a large enough purse. He takes advantage of the kingdom's impending revolution by playing both sides of the conflict. Each rescue contract he fulfills turns a tidy profit until he angers the wrong duke.

Charlotte is a criminal-in-training who yearns to crack her mentor’s guarded façade, but is unprepared to confront the depths of his dark past. As her sense of right and wrong blurs, Charlotte discovers just how far she will go for the Cloaked Shadow and the sacrifices he requires.

Now hunted throughout the land, Fawkes must face long-buried secrets in order to survive, but they could destroy him. Charlotte risks everything, including her heart, to set Fawkes on the path to redemption.

Will Charlotte have the strength to pull Fawkes into the light, or will she follow him into the shadows?

“Please, whatever you are,” Henry begged, “don't hurt us. Please.”

There was no answer, but Charlotte heard the rustle of fabric and a felt a light breeze on her skin as the shadow whisked by her. She whirled around to face the cell across from Henry's. Through the haze of her torchlight circle, Charlotte watched as the shadow knelt down, freeing a hand holding a key from the depths of a long, black cloak. With the telltale rasp of iron on iron, the door to the other cell creaked open.

The stranger crept soundlessly inside, returning seconds later with a body slung over its shoulders. The body emitted a low groan, and the shadow lowered its burden to lean against the wall. With unexpected care, the shadow crouched over the emaciated prisoner and murmured softly to him.

Seeing this spark of humanity gave Charlotte the courage she needed. “Help us.” It was a statement, not a question.

The cloaked figure remained kneeling next to its charge, and a man's voice finally spoke in a low rumble. “But you have nothing to offer me.”

Charlotte hesitated at his unexpected statement, trying to decipher its meaning. “Free my brother, and you can have anything you want.”

“Is there a Dom you’re interested in?” Andi asked.

“No.” She’d seen them all, and no one spoke to her soul. “Justin’s off limits. What about Delana?” Andi half-shrugged. “Maybe she’s who you want.”

“I want a male Dom. Delana’s great, but she’s hunting for a hunk, too.” Mary swept her gaze over the crowd. She knew everyone there, but one man caught her attention. Sebastian Paul. She gasped. She knew Sebastian. Too well. What was he doing at the club? He’d never struck her as being interested in the lifestyle, much less a Dom.

“What?” Andi nudged Mary. “Who do you see?”

“A guy from work.” She sank onto the nearest stool. Would Sebastian care if he knew her? Would he out her? They worked together. He wouldn’t want to out her … right? He’d risk outing himself.

“Oh, Master Seb.” Andi nodded. “He and Sir are friends. I guess he started coming back to the club last month. You know him?”

“Not as a Master.” He worked in the area next to hers at the air traffic control center. They shared working hours one day a week. When their breaks aligned, they talked about life, music, and whatever else they thought of. She liked him and looked forward to their Thursdays together.

“Well, he’s friends with Sir. Maybe I can set up a meeting. We can all play or hang out.” Andi grasped Mary’s hand. “Come on.”

“Andi.” She didn’t mean to be pushy or expect special treatment. They were at the club, and she didn’t deserve to be ballsy. She could be forthright, and Doms didn’t want subs to top from the bottom. They wanted bratty subs. She wasn’t bratty. She also wasn’t sure she wanted to submit to Sebastian. She didn’t want to ruin the friendship.

“Just come with me.”

Gripping story. I fell in love with these characters from the beginning.

Turned - Virna DePaul

This story gripped me from the very beginning. As I listened to the talented Sean Crisden, the people became almost real. The distinct voices spoken by Sean Crisden made it clear who was speaking. As for the story itself, I enjoyed the fast-pace and action. There were moments of laughter and others of tears. Ana was such a strong-willed woman, determined to move beyond her past but not wanting to leave behind her family. I loved her interactions with Ty who was such a sexy man yet caring and devoted. His dislike for what he had become made it more real for me. I highly recommend this story and will be looking for more to come.

I received a copy of this audio as a prize in a contest, and this is my unsolicited review.

Dark gritty world with rebels and cruel leaders. Love brings change to all.

Cloaked - Taylor Hobbs

This story had a very interesting, gripping beginning. As the world grew, all the hate, pain, and fear became more apparent. I hated how Charlotte lost her innocent approach to life, trying to protect her family and all. Fawkes brought out the better in her and built her inner strength as well as her outer strength. He was almost like three different people, with his pain from past hurts helping him survive. The two supported each other, and there were times I actually had tears in my eyes. I would have loved a better overall "view" of the world created in this book, but it did not take away from the storytelling.

I received an ARC of this story for free, and this is my unsolicited review.

Different takes on fairy tales.

Romantically Enchanted - Tammy Andresen, Dawn Brower, Amanda Mariel, Madeline Martin, Rebekah Lewis, Sandra Sookoo

I am basing this off the first story in this anthology. I enjoyed Her Highland Beast, which included a Princess and the Pea fairy tale mixed in with Beauty and the Beast. Evina and Duncan were destined though they almost lost each other. As their story unfolded, I became involved in the story. I cried at the end when all looked bleak, and I was touched with what the power of their love could do and what those around them were willing to do.

As I read the other stories, I will edit this post.

A time period I enjoy reading about, characters that I enjoyed.

Outlaw King - Julie Johnstone

I enjoyed this tale of Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh, and how they came together. This was such a gritty, dark time of history, and watching them fall in love through it all was good for my heart. Both were strong characters, doing what they had to, and I wanted to keep turning pages to see how much more they would have to endure before having their HEA. I recommend this story.

I received an ARC of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Drenched with a Duke

Drawn to the Marquess

Beauty is found everywhere, enjoy. Kept me turning pages.

Drawn to the Marquess - Bronwen Evans

Such a burden to carry for Stephen. I loved how Penelope was able to see beyond that burden. When misunderstandings and unspoken words threatened to tear apart this couple, my heart hurt. I loved their chemistry, their ability to see more than what was right in front of them, as well as the honest and steamy scenes between the two of them. Great descriptions and emotion. I recommend this story.

I received an ARC of this story through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

Outlaw King by Julie Johnstone
Outlaw King by Julie Johnstone

Just released!!! August 31, 2018. New series by Julie Johnstone

Intrigue, danger, still love finds a way, hard to stop reading.

The Marriage Paradox - Noelle Greene

This story was one bumpy messy ride. Olivia was a wonderful character. I liked her strength and her innocence, which never wavered as things changed around her. Markus was a bit of a prick to start but as I got to know him along with Olivia my opinion changed. Despite all the violence, political intrigue, counter intelligence, I enjoyed the story and found it hard to stop reading. There were a few tears near the end as well as a heavy sigh of relief. I recommend this story.

I received a copy of this story through Candid Book Reviews, and this is my unsolicited review.

Quick read, love stronger than class.

Drenched with a Duke - Emily Murdoch

Another fun story from Emily Murdoch. Teresa and Alexander are from different worlds, but their attraction sees beyond that. Their love for each other is stronger than opinions of others. I enjoyed their interactions, their strong feelings and opinions, and even their expectations of each other. With a kick in the pants, they come together for an HEA as it should be.

I received an ARC copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Review Tour: With This Heart by Red L Jameson

With This Heart
by Red L. Jameson

GENRE: Paranormal romance (more specifically military/fantasy romance)

Talk about a killer kiss…

Being a former soldier with PTSD takes its toll on Aaron and has wiped him clean of optimism along with having dreams. But he’s no longer sure if he’s living in reality or fantasy after he tries to save a friend and finds his world filled with women who have wings and…Valkyries.

Adala kills. Not on purpose. She’s a Valkyrie—from just one touch, she takes warriors to the afterlife. Oh, but she’d give anything for a break, for normalcy, to have one day of not wearing her legionnaire uniform. When she’s asked to talk to the human Aaron to help him understand just what he’s in for when he tripped into her world, she jumps at the chance, even though she knows Aaron more than she cares to admit, even though she has an insane crush on him, even though she can’t touch him at all. But she gets to wear jeans and talk to a man—a real-life, hero of a man.

From her adorable made-up swearwords to when she wears his clothes, from the fact that she’s hundreds of years old to her pet Pegasus, Aaron falls hard for the shy Valkyrie. Dare he risk his life for a kiss? He’s thinking about it, because already he’s given her his heart.

With This Heart is a standalone story, that’s part of the With These Wings Series—books that mix rock-hard military men with feathered-fantasy femme fatales for a sizzling hot adventure to find love. Join Chanticleer winner, Red L. Jameson, for more of this heart-tugging fairy tale series.

He shook his head, his ocean-blue gaze slowly snagging away from her legs again. “I want to dance with you.”

Billie Holiday came on, all sugary and soulful—honey for the ears. Not exactly period, but perfect nonetheless.

She silently chuckled, looking down at his shiny black shoes. “That’d be nice.”

He stepped forward.

She screeched and jumped back onto the stairs. “Aaron!”

He held a hand out, glanced at it, and winced. “Just trust me.”

“We can dance.”

“No, we can’t.”

“Give me a try.”

“You know I can’t touch you.”

“Who said anything about touching?”

She blinked, her lids fluttering in confusion.

He smiled reassuringly. “Just stand right here,” he said, indicating that she was to stand close, but as she stood, she wouldn’t get that near him. He kept smiling though. “Listen to the music.”

She tilted her head and couldn’t help but smile as she watched him sway side to side. Very slowly at first, and hardly noticeably, but there he was, dancing in the kitchen. So she joined him, swaying side to side, grinning, and trying not to feel her heart pound in her chest the way it did. It never thumped like this—full of ache, full of wanting something she knew she couldn’t have. Oh, how she wanted to hold his hand and place her other hand on his shoulder like a normal woman would do. She’d never been envious of human women, but she was then.
